WASHINGTON - The recognitions continue piling up for American Track & Field junior Liam Purdy, as was awarded the GEICO AU Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, Feb. 20, after a pair of stellar performances at the Patriot League Indoor Championships.
Purdy's weekend began with his first of two PL Championship titles, as he anchored the Eagles' 4x800m team to the program's first conference win since 2009. Their winning time of 7:31.30 not only put them at the top of the NCAA rankings in the event, but also surpassed the ten-year-old American University School Record of 7:31.91 held by Alex Caudana, Brian McCabe, Steve Hallinan and Dustin Emrani.
His success continued into the final day of competition in Boston, Mass., when he toed the line for his only individual race of the weekend, the 800m run. Not even halfway into the race, a competitor clipped Purdy's right heel, nudging the back of his foot out of the shoe.
A quick decision by Purdy to use the following few steps to kick the shoe off was a season-defining on, as he maintained his position in with the lead pack and, upon rounding into the final turn of the race, overcame the leaders to claim the individual victory. He crossed in an impressive 1:53.25, good for a new personal record and the third-fastest time in school history.
Purdy will look to continue building on this momentum into the outdoor season, which is scheduled to begin Saturday, March 25. For the latest on AU Track & Field, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AUEagles.com.
