@AU_SwimDive Has Strong Opening Day at PL Championships

Matt Bean swam the opening leg of the 200 medley relay

LEWISBURG, Pa.– Chris Hernandez of American University improved his season-best by 14 points and his morning preliminary score by 18 points to finish 13th in the men's 3-meter diving competition Wednesday as the 2019 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships began at Bucknell.

Teammate Connor Chidsey also scored for the Eagles on the 3-meter board, placing 15th on the first of four days of competition at the league championships.

The AU men and women were in seventh place in the team standings after the opening day. The Eagle men had 54 points, with the women at 46 points. Navy led both sides of the standings.

The meet continues through Saturday evening.

MEET NOTES

• The men's 200 medley relay team went 1:34.20 to finish seventh. Matt Bean, Garrett Sooter, Scott Callander and Yannick Bohbot-Dridi were two seconds better than other AU foursomes this season and posted the 13th-best relay all-time at AU.

• Hernandez qualified 16th in the morning preliminaries, but moved up three spots in the evening final. 

Liam Riebling went 1:42.96 to cut three seconds off his season-best to swim the lead leg of the 800 free relay. He joined with Luke Bennett, Adam Kawut and Sam Fromkin to go 6:52.57 to place seventh. The time cut 11 seconds off the season-best for the Eagles and is 13th all-time. It is the first addition to the top-16 list in the 800 free relay since 2015 and improves on AU's 10th-place finish in the event at last year's meet.

Abby Longstaff, Malak Hattab, Kyra Manson and Eleanor Felton finished eighth in the women's 200-yard medley relay in 1:45.06. The mark was the best of the season by three seconds and was fourth on AU's all-time list.

Alex Brosvik, Natalie Hamlet, Ellie Kight and Ryan Jolley were seventh in the 800 freestyle relay, with their time of 7:36.91 ranking third all-time at AU. The mark was 10 seconds better than the previous-best for the Eagles this season.
