EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Fiona Caulfield and Coach John Barry earned ECAC Female Diver and Female Diving Coach of the Meet, while Alex Feys closed American University's swimming efforts with a meet record on Sunday at the ECAC Winter Championships.
Caulfield, an Eagle senior, won the 1-meter diving and finished second at 3 meters in the meet. Barry, now in his 10th season as head diving coach at AU, was earned the coaching honor after Caulfield, Anna Derrow and Emma Shetter accounted for 162 team points in the diving events. Derrow won the 3-meter competition.
Feys, one of AU's strong freshman class on the women's side, cut three seconds off her prevous season-best to go 2:03.04 and win the 200-yard butterfly. Her time was the best by an Eagle in 24 seasons, with only the school record of 2:01.93 by Gabriella Csepe in 1993 ranking better. Tori Haviland finished third in that race.
The Eagles had three other top-10 finishes in the pool on Sunday. Natalie Hamlet finished fifth in the 200 backstroke in 2:08.60, Matt Bean finished a strong meet with a third in the 200 back (season-best 1:54.58) and Garrett Sooter was 10th in the same event.
AU finished sixth in the women's team standings with 611.5 points. Wagner was the women's team champion. Emmanuel College won the men's team title, with AU placing 10th.
American will take time off for final exams before returning to competition. The Eagles are home next on Saturday, Jan. 13 to host Georgetown and George Washington.
