Konerth, Nakhid Earn Top Senior Awards

WASHINGTONNatalie Konerth and Panos Nakhid were honored Sunday night as the top Senior Female and Male Athletes, as American University held its awards banquet at the Marriott Wardman Park.

In addition to the student awards, retiring AU President Dr. Neil Kerwin and his wife, Ann, were presented with gifts from Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Billy Walker, including a varsity letter for Dr. Kerwin after being cut as a freshman walk-on in men's basketball during his undergraduate time at American.
Konerth, a graduating senior field hockey player, is a forward from Huntingtown, Md. She finished her Eagle tenure in 14th in career points and was a two-time All Mid-Atlantic Region and two-time unanimous first team All-Patriot League selection. She was also honored last month as one of two top female seniors in GPA, carrying a 4.00 in applied mathematics.
 
Nakhid, a graduating forward from Thessaloniki, Greece, was the Patriot League Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year. He is a two-time first team All-Patriot League pick and helped lead the Eagles to the regular-season title in the PL.
 
The Senior Athlete Awards were voted on by all 10 AU head coaches and senior administrative staff.
 
In addition to the athletic honors, the Team GPA Awards went to the women's swimming and diving, and men's cross country and track teams. Senior swimmer Shannon Scovel, also a Fulbright Scholarship winner, was awarded the Barbara J. Reimann Postgraduate Scholarship.
