Edward (Ed) Stanley Clements, a 2003 inductee into the Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame at American University, passed away on Mar. 24, 2017. He was 79 years old.
Clements was a 10-letter collegiate athlete for the Eagles from 1956-1960. His dedication to American was evident by the numerous awards for athletic achievements.
In 1960 he was awarded the Outstanding Independent Man Scholarship, Leadership and Service to the University as well as the AU O.D.K. Award for Outstanding Senior Athlete.
During his college career, the athletic department flew him by helicopter from a track meet in Washington, DC, so he could then play catcher in a baseball game on the same afternoon in Baltimore, MD.
After receiving a master's degree in physical education from Penn State, he returned to Montgomery County where he taught and eventually became an administrator. He retired from MCPS after a 35-year career in public school education.
In 2003, Ed was inducted into American University's Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame for his achievements as an outstanding basketball player.
While enjoying retirement life, Ed was an avid and scratch golfer, often winning senior tournaments with many of his golfing buddies. He will forever be missed but never forgotten by his wife of 57 years, Dee; children Jeff (Suzanne), Dana and Brad (De'Aun); grandchildren Amanda, Shawn, Justin, Miles, and Ellington "Duke" who will join the family in May; great-grandchildren Nolan and Arya.
