WASHINGTON – One of the iconic on-campus venues in the Washington, D.C., area has gotten a makeover in preparation for the fall and winter indoor seasons at American University.

Over the summer, Bender Arena received a new playing surface, a refurbished floor on the mezzanine level and an upgraded concessions facility.

"We think our fans will be very impressed with the way our facility looks and feels for the upcoming seasons," said Dr. Billy Walker, the director of athletics and recreation. "Everyone in the AU family will feel a tinge of excitement when they step in the arena and experience the new look."

The new playing floor features the recognizable A-U logo, a royal blue sideline and baseline area, as well as a much lighter stain on the competition surface itself, adding a striking visual contrast.

A fresh mezzanine surface welcomes fans into the arena from the lobby and greets visitors with a logo inlaid in the floor. The mezzanine also features new portable bleachers that will accommodate larger crowds.

Fans will also be able to use an enhanced concessions area, with better access in and out of that area.

"We're very proud of Bender Arena and know our returning fans and our new fans enjoy the new look in our historic building."
